Artist Statement

Sylvain Gelewski is an artist and curator who graduated in Contemporary Art Practices from HEAD–Geneva in 2019. His work consists in patching up paintings, writing texts in the form of lists, collecting banal or useless objects, hastily drawing maps and people as well as inventing slightly odd performances. Some performance stake the shape of installations created in situ, often to music, with a certain obsession for color, the news, lists, social media, and the value of work, through a play between norms and their most superfluous details. In this idea of mapping, his curatorial practice most of the time connects artists' singularities.

From 2014 to 2017, he co-managed the independent music label EICA Records.
From 2019 to 2022, he actively fought for artist’s rights, within the G.A.R.A.Ge collective, among others.
From 2020 to 2023, he curated exhibitions in the Soul2Soul space in Geneva.
In 2021, he co-founded a trans-disciplinary art project named Doppelganger Collective. The title plays with notions of duality, mimicry, synonyms, twins, and lookalikes.
In 2023, he began working as a curator for the Spielact festival.

In short, if Sylvain Gelewski’s various practices were to be arranged into one single form, it would probably be a Bento.
