In her solo exhibition, I like it picasso! Melanie Akeret (*1991) adopts the circular pictorial strategies of meme culture. Existing images are appropriated and modified. The motifs, such as lobsters, pianos and flowers, that stretch across the canvases are both legible and interchangeable. The quickly captured, flat motifs play with tropes of the decorative without being reduced to a purely ornamental function. The visual artifacts become expressions of a painterly investigation of access, visual language, and artistic subjectivity.
