Artist Statement

Born in 1986, Gaël Epiney currently lives and works in Lausanne. In 2011, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in visual arts at the University of Art and Design of Lausanne (écal), and in 2014 a Master’s degree in educational studies at the HEP Vaud. For the past ten years, he has been exhibiting regularly in Switzerland, as well as abroad where he had the opportunity to carry out several projects.

His artistic work is influenced by the mountains and their traditions, as well as by the observations he has made on his travels. For almost twenty years, he has been regularly travelling in Asia, particularly in Tibet where he has studied the language and traditional painting. These experiences have modified not only his perception of the world, but also his own creative process. These influences can be seen in the materials he chooses, in his meditative coloring sessions and in the way he combines colors and shapes. His protean work offers a subtle dialogue between nature and culture, on the edge of abstraction. He draws his inspiration from attentive and contemplative observation of the mineral and plant worlds, as well as the cultural and sacred objects that surround us. Colorful blend of organic and geometric forms, his work explores themes such as collection, repetition, nomadism, the sacred and the popular culture.
