m.a.d. - about you
2021

A 20 minutes live online video one-on-one performance

What does togetherness actually mean? How can we overcome what separates us - arbitrary societal categories, masks, social distancing, technologies, screens, walls, borders, skin - and mostly ourselves? How can we encounter the other and create caring and nurturing relationships in a hostile and increasingly digitalized world? How can the boundaries between separate intimacies and physical spaces be diluted? How do we fall in love?

The COVID crisis as well as the virulent political inequalities in our capitalist, racist, sexist and ableist neoliberal society, highlight the vital importance of interpersonal relationships, solidarity, community building and radical care as necessary survival strategies in a hostile environment. Based on their latest stage work m.a.d., which premiered on the 3rd of November 2020 at Tanzhaus Zürich, Valerie Reding created m.a.d. - about you in 2021 as a solo version and a more personal iteration of the piece. With the original music created by Ivy Monteiro and a collage of text fragments exploring our interpersonal relationships, the spectator is invited to immerse themself in a dystopic and intimate world where desires, longing, loneliness, obsession, love, rage and cravings for the other and the self merge into a shattered dream - full of hope.
